Build the Skills You Need For Success
What is the difference between a Tutor and a Coach? When I coach students, they are in the lead. They decide what their goals are, what they need help on, what they need to work on each week. Then it's my job to help them get to where they need to go. So often, schools focus on the content on the exam and not on the skills a student needs to be able to master that content. Students need to be able to be self aware, to identify their own challenges and make a plan to solve them, and they need crucial self-advocacy skills that will serve them as they are becoming more independent. Often, students have further barriers to overcome - a language barrier as they are learning in their second language; a culture gap, as they are moving between high school programs and need to adjust; special educational needs, such as ADHD, Dyslexia, or Autism, and they need a trusted and open minded coach to help them navigate.
Last week, I worked with a student who decided to use her session to talk through her Global Politics reading because she didn't understand it.
Another student was overwhelmed with all of his homework and tests, so we talked through his priorities and made a study schedule - complete with a list of strategies he's going to use to ace his exams.
Every week, I run a silent writing class, for minimally-verbal students who can focus on their written communication.
