The Outsiders: A Review

by Celia, 13

The Outsiders is about two groups of teenagers ,the Greasers and the Socs, who live in a town divided by class and wealth.

The Greasers are from poorer families and stick together like a family ,while the Socs are wealthier and often looked down on by the Greasers. The main characters , like Ponyboy, Johnny and Dally, face big problems like violence , misunderstanding and finding their identity. They live in a world where loyalty and friendship are everything, but their lives are full of struggles and inequality. The book focuses on themes like belonging, social class difference, and the importance of understanding others.

I think  the outsiders is a powerful book because it shows what its like to feel like an outsider and still find strengths in friendship.I really like the parts where the character showed loyalty to  each other like when Johnny and Ponyboy ran away or when Dally was trying to protect them. Some parts made me think of my own friendships and the  way people can be judged by things beyond their control. Even though i cannot understand or experience the type of violence and risks being taken , for example when Pobyboy and Johnny ran away  because Johnny had killed a Soc, I think  that it was very interesting to see their lives were so different from mine but still felt relatable , thanks to the friendship shown in the book I could still take part to what friendship really looked like and how my friends are also very important and so is my family.

The Socs are rich, have fancy cars, and are seen as popular, but they hide their problems behind their image. The Greasers are  poorer and tougher, and they stick together like family because they don't have much else. This shows inequality because Socs have power and privilege, while the greasers have to fight for respect and survival.

The Socs have a larger social network because they come from wealthy and influential families. This means they have more connections or opportunities to help them succeed or get out of trouble. For example,  if a Soc gets  into a fight or causes problemes, people are more likely  to overlook it or excuse their behavior because of their social status. They can rely on their parents , teachers and even the police to side with them or give them another chance. The Greasers,on the other hand, don't have that kind of support. They are judged harshly because of where they come from, and they have to rely on themselves and their small group of friends.

This shows how inequality affects the two groups while the Socs can fall back on their social networks, the Greasers have no safety net outside their gang.

The gang is like family to Ponyboy, Sodapop and Darry. They look after each other, protect each other, and provide a sense of belonging. For ponyboy its more than just a group, its where he feels supported, especially since his parents are gone even though he sometimes struggles to connect with his older brother Darry .Sodapop adds humor and warmth   to the group, while Darry takes on a protective, almost parental role, even though he can be strict. The gang is like a safety net, since they don't have the same social networks as the Socs, they protect each  other from the violence of the Socs and the difficulties of their rough lives.

I would definitely recommend The Outsiders. It's a great book that teaches important lessons about friendship , loyalty and understanding people who are different from you .The story is exiting, with a lot of  action and emotional moments that keep you interested ,and the characters feel very real.It shows how people can struggle with unfairness and still find hope and connection with others. The themes of belonging, identity and looking beyond stereotypes are things that everyone can relate in some way. Plus, its a quick read that makes you think about how kindness and empathy can make a difference in divided world
