Out of My Mind - A Review
by Malk A, 15
Out of My Mind is an extraordinary novel that digs deep into the life of Melody Brooks, an eleven year old girl, with celebrated palsy who has never spoken a word. Despite her physical limitations, Melody is very intelligent, with an exceptional memory and a passion for learning. The novel is told from Melody’s perspective, allowing us as readers to have a more deeper more personal look into her thoughts and emotions. In this book, we get to explore the power of resilience, empathy, and the need to be understood. This story challenges readers to reconsider their own biases and assumptions about individuals with disabilities.
Out of My Mind presents themes like the themes perseverance, acceptance, and the importance of communication. One of the primary issues explored is how society often judges individuals by their appearances rather that than their abilities. Melody describes her frustration, saying, “I have never spoken one single word. I am almost eleven years old” (p.2). This simple but profound statement shows the struggle she faced daily which is being underestimated, ignored, and sometimes mocked by her peers and even her teachers. Another significant theme is Melody’s fight for involvement, for being able to take part in things that she knows she can’t. She observed in chapter 7, “Everybody uses words to express themselves. Except me. And I bet most people don’t realize the power of words.” This statement highlights how important communication is for connection and expression and how devastating it is to be silenced. When Melody receives her Medi-Talker device in chapter 15, which is a computer that allows individuals to communicate and express their thoughts, she describes the moment as life changing, ‘It was like somebody gave me a pair of wings.” This device helps her to finally share her thoughts and advocate for herself, becoming a turning point in her life and journey.
Melody Brooks is one of the most captivating and inspiring characters I have ever encountered in literature. Her determination, intelligence and sense of humour shine through despite the challenges she faces. In chapter 2, she reflects, “Words have always swirled around me like snowflakes, each one delicate and different, each one melting untouched in my hands.” This description illustrates both her love for words and her frustration at being unable to express them. Melody’s strength becomes even more evident as she fights to prove her worth to those who doubt her. For example, during the Whiz Kids competition, she worked tirelessly to memorize facts and contribute to her team despite their doubts about her abilities. Melody’s perseverance reminds me of the importance of seeing beyond a person’s limitations and racing using their unique strength. I can relate to her some way because I feel like I also have so much to say sometimes but struggle despite my shyness and anxiety.
Other characters also play a crucial role in Melody’s life. Her mother and neighbor Mrs. V are her biggest supporters, constantly pushing her to achieve her potential. Mrs. V encourages Melody in chapter 9, saying, “You’ve got to work harder than anyone else and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.” This support provides Melody with the confidence to face challenges. However, not all characters are supportive. Melody’s teacher, Mr.Dimming, doubts her intelligence and some of her classmates like Claire and Molly who are openly cruel towards her. These antagonistic characters point out the prejudgement prejudice and ignorance that people with disabilities often encounter.
Reading Out of My Mind was an emotional experience. I felt a range of emotions:, anger, sadness and hope that the author is able to portray Melody’s perspective with depth. One of the most heartbreaking moments occurs in chapter 23 when melodies Melody’s team makes mates exclude her from the trip to the Whiz Kids competition. She reflects, “ …it was like they all decided who I was without even asking me.” This moment made me think about how often people make assumptions about others without truly understanding their them. On the other hand, moments of triumph, like when Melody used her Medi-Talker to tell her parents she loves them for the first time, brought emotions of relief and joy. Melody’s journey reminded me of the importance of empathy in the need to create a more full and understanding world.
The themes and messages of Out of My Mind are relevant and impactful making an important book for readers of all ages. Melody’s insight in chapter 31, “ We all have disabilities. What’s yours?”challenges readers to reflect on their own struggles and how they might treat others with more sympathy. The novel also informs critical questions about the education system and I can better support students with disabilities. For example, Melody’s experiences in her classroom revealed reveal both the benefits and shortcomings of ordinary mainstream education. This book could spark meaningful discussions about accessibilities, inclusion, and the power of communication which is why I believe it should be taught in schools.
I would definitely recommend Out of My Mind to anyone looking for an inspiring and intriguing read. Middle school students, parents and educators in particular would benefit from its powerful messages about resilience and acceptance. Draper’s writing is accessible yet deeply profound making a suitable for both young readers and adults. As Melody says in chapter 27, “I’m not trying to be noble. I’m just trying to live.” (page?)This quote summarises the nature of the story. Melody is not asking for a special treatment she simply wants to be treated as an equal. The book is a reminder that everyone deserves to be seen and heard no matter there is what their circumstances.
In conclusion, Out of My Mind is a beautifully written, an unforgettable novel that challenged stereotypes and highlights highlighted the strength of human spirit. Sharon M. Draper gives a voice to an overlooked community inspiring readers to think differently about disability and inclusion. Melody Brooks is a character that reminds me of the power of determination and the importance of empathy. I would read this book 9 out of 10 for its captivating story, relatable character and impactful message. This is a book that everyone should read and it would change the way you see the world.
