Influence in We Dream of Space

by Nathan, 11

Modern teenagers can be very influenced of what people and other kids might think about them. this is what happens in We Dream of Space by Erin Entrada Kelly. We see that Bird, Fitch, and Cash are influenced by the people around them in different ways

Bird is very influenced by what other people think of her and her family. For example, Bird wants to be an astronaut but Fitch tells her she can’t so she’s afraid she can’t. She even throws away her schematics. Then Cash fishes them out and makes her feel better. This shows that Bird cares a lot about her brothers’ opinions, both good and bad.

Fitch cares about what other people think too. He doesn’t want people to think he’s mean.We know this because after saying mean things to Amanda, he regrets it instantly. He wants to say sorry but he’s scared of what she’ll say. He’s afraid to hear what she thinks of him.  This suggests that caring too much about what other people think is keeping Fitch from being nicer.

Cash is influenced by adults’ expectations. This is demonstrated when Cash tries to meet coach’s expectations by getting his grade up to join the track team. It makes him feel good that coach doesn’t laugh at him when he asks to join the team. This implies that Cash thinks adults are very important and he has to meet their expectations.

Therefore, we can see that Bird , Fitch and Cash are affected by what the rest of the world might think of them. I would recommend this novel because it is so realistic and these situations often happen in many families.
