Girl of Ink and Stars - A Review

by Viola, 14

This book talks about the story of Isabella, a young girl who lives on the island of Joya. She is the daughter of the cartographer and she’s friends with Lupe the daughter of the governor. One day Lupe disappears into the Forgotten territories of the island and Isabella decides to leave her village to go and find her with the governor and his men.

Isabella is a young girl who lives alone with her father, she only has one friend, Lupe, and really enjoys cartography that her father taught her. At the start of the book she’s just another girl who goes to school, however as the story goes on she has to disguise herself as a boy to help Lupe, she has to start making choices on her own as she can’t really rely on anyone. At the end of the book she even ends up lying to Lupe to do what she thinks is right and save the island.

I felt a little bored at the start of the story since I hadn’t really caught on yet but after Cata was killed and the action was introduced I really liked the book a lot more. I did feel a bit scared when the search party was attacked in the village of Gris, the scene was really well written and it happened in a rush which captures what the characters felt at that moment.

I would recommend this book, it’s well written and the setting is nice with the connections to our world.

I really liked the book, how the story plays out and the connections between the characters, I would give it a 8/10.
