Girl of Ink and Stars - A Review
by Enora, 11
This book is the fantasy story of Isabella a thirteen year old girl on a journey to find her friend Lupe and map the island. It is fictional book set on the island of Joya where a cruel dictator rules. It is about friendship, courage and bravery as you travel with Isabella through the island where she learns to make more important decisions and brave the things she has never seen as her island floats in the sky.
While I read this book I felt mostly happy but sometimes I couldn’t really understand what was happening in the scenes and there were a few times moments that I didn’t like in it, but I did like that Isabella went to go rescue Lupe even though things were complicated between them and they had gotten into a fight and she had to confront many challenges to get to her, but she persevered until the end.
I think that this book should be taught in schools as a novel study because it would be a more interesting and captivating way of learning about dictatorships and the effect they have on the population. Even though it is a bit long to start with it gets more interesting and the student are more likely to listen if the like it more than just doing a history class. Another book that has the same theme is Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez and even though the plot is completely different they have the same idea of a country ruled by a unfair dictator.
I would recommend this book to people who like a world of magic not so different to ours, and also people who like stories of adventure and travelle. Travel I didn’t like this book so I would probably not recommend it to anyone else because otherwise it has a hint of historical fiction which is what I didn’t like so much, I would have preferred a story with no connection to the world that we live in.
In all I think this book is pretty good and I liked the themes. I am giving it a 7 out of 10.
