Book Review: The House in the Cerulean Sea

by Enora, 13

The House in the Cerulean Sea is a fantasy book about a man called Linus who works for a government agency that is supposed to look after magical youth. He lives a lonely, rigid life until he becomes conscious of how unfairly the law treats the children and decides to stay and live at the orphanage rather than to go back to his old life.

While I read this book I felt sorry for the magical children in the orphanages, because of their differences, no one wanted to adopt them and they were considered dangerous. I found the villagers that disliked the children very harsh and discriminatory towards them even though they hadn’t done anything wrong . DICOMY, the government agency the main character, Linus,  works for is also very biased towards the children and closes many orphanages down not caring about where the children will live.

My favourite part of the book was when Linus decided to stay and found a family with Arthur and the orphanage children instead of returning to work for DICOMY, which I think is a way of saying that he doesn’t support there biased rules anymore.

The important ideas in the book are that children need a proper loving family to grow up in so that they can feel safe and that it’s wrong to be spiteful and treat people differently just because they are unlike us, and that sometimes people don’t realise that they are being biased because that's how everyone else acts. It also shows that it’s more complicated to get rid of a discriminating law than it is to get rid of a discriminating person.

I would recommend this book, especially to people who enjoy fantasy books, I also think that it should be taught in school so that children can understand what the effect of discriminating can have on a community. It could also teach them to accept people who are different to them, to not make stereotypes and to not come to a conclusion about a person based on their ethnicity. The book also shows how people can change and that it’s important to be kind.

My last thought about this book is that it helps people understand how discriminated people feel and how it can affect their whole lives, they won’t feel at home because no one wants to adopt them and DICOMY is closing their orphanages, they don’t have the same opportunities like getting a proper education  in a school like the non-magical children and having a job. I would rate this book with 4 stars because the story was very captivating but I found the beginning of the book a bit long.
