A Wish in the Dark - A Review

by Enora, 11

A Wish in the Dark is a fantasy book about a young nine year old boy called Pong who dreams of escaping his prison and going to Chattana, the City of Lights,  which a mysterious governor rules over. But when he finally gets his chance he realises that the city is not what he imagined luckily he makes friendly acquaintances there to help him in his journey to escape his old jail masters daughter.

I think this book should be taught as a novel study at school because it is about injustice which is something that causes a problem in the world and needs to be looked at. It is also more interesting for a student to read a book that has other ideas in it then to listen to their teacher, it’s another way of learning and it might work better.

When I read this book I mostly enjoyed it but I didn’t like the fact that the people were jailed for such little crimes like stealing foods when they are starved, the government should have helped them but it is possible that it was to scare anyone who tried to steal. The most unfair is that the children are also jailed with there parents even though they didn’t do anything and then they are treated like criminals. But in the end they fight back and the problem is dealt with.

I would recommend this book because I found it very interesting and I liked the themes alot, it makes you want to read on and discover the rest of the story. I like the fact that throughout the book they are trying to outrule the idea that if you are born in the darkness you will always stay there.

In all I liked this book and I found it captivating. I would give it a 7 out of 10.
